Neely's 2012 Pinot Noir Upper Picnic is attractive, albeit not as differentiated to the Upper Picnic as it has often been in the past. Dark red cherry, plum, tobacco and spice blossom in an ample, generous Pinot Noir. The Upper Picnic is a bit more polished and less overtly tannic than the Picnic, but the wines are more similar than is often the case, one of the legacies of a vintage that smoothed out differences between vineyard sites throughout California. The creamy, expressive finish suggests the 2012 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This parcel was regrafted in 2006 to own-rooted vines. - 93pts, Antonio Galloni
