The 2011 Sumo delivers again with dark aromatics, richness, and copious but supple tannins living up to its name and reputation. Harvested on the 29th of October, both blocks of Petite Sirah were co-fermented with Viognier, blended with a touch of Syrah, and aged in a mix of barriques, Muids d'Oc, and Demi Muids, all French Burgundian cooperage, 65% of which was new oak. The 2011 Sumo is a blend of 85% Petite Sirah, 13% Syrah, and 2% Viognier, all from Shake Ridge Vineyard. The nose is layered with stargazer lily, ash, blackberry reduction, anise, and graphite. Purity rules the palate with the sweet and savory flavors of fennel seed, volcanic soil, black peppercorn, black currant, and bittersweet chocolate. The mouth feel is massive but silky, with plush, rich tannins and great length. DJ calls it the velvet sledgehammer. Composition: 85% Petite Sirah, 13% Syrah, 2% Viognier Production: 190 cases
